Hemorrhoid

What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are very common lumps that develop in and around the anus (outlet). Hemorrhoids are sometimes described as “varicose veins” of the anal canal. They occur when there is a weakness in the anal canal that causes the lining to thicken and then the blood vessels in the anus and rectum become swollen. This swelling can lead to painful, swollen lumps in or around the anus. Hemorrhoids can cause symptoms such as bleeding, bruising, pain, itching, and discomfort. Treatment for hemorrhoids includes home remedies such as using moisturizing creams and laxatives, but in more severe cases, surgical treatment may be required.
What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?
If you have hemorrhoids, you may notice bright red blood on your stool or toilet paper when you have a bowel movement. There may be some itching, inflammation, discomfort, or pain around the anus. Sometimes there may be a noticeable lump that protrudes from the anus. Fecal incontinence can also be a symptom of hemorrhoids. Many people have no symptoms or experience very mild symptoms that disappear after a few days. For other people, hemorrhoids are more painful.
Hemorrhoids are classified into 4 different types based on their size and severity:
- First-degree hemorrhoids often bleed slightly during bowel movements, but they remain inside the anus and are usually not painful.
- Second-degree hemorrhoids bleed during bowel movements and protrude from the anus. They disappear into the anus on their own after a bowel movement.
- Grade 3 hemorrhoids should be pushed back into the anus after defecation. They may be painful if they are large.
- Grade 4 hemorrhoids are larger lumps that permanently protrude from the anus and cannot be pushed back in. The blood inside these hemorrhoids may clot, and the lumps can become very painful.
